CALENDAR OF
UPCOMING EVENTS:

In addition to our many dinners, meetings, camp-outs, and hikes, Pack 89 members look forward all year long to our many major events.  These events are the highlights of the scout's year, often motivating them to spend many hours during the weeks leading up to the events spent in building their models or planning skits.  Here are our favorite events that you and your young scout can look forward to when you join our Pack.

Pinewood Derby

Using an inexpensive kit available at the Scout Store, your scout gets to design, shape, paint, assemble, qualify, and race their own small pinewood car.  These cars are under six inches long and are raced on a long ramped track.  Winners are determined by a laser detection system at the finish line.

Rocket Blast Space Derby

Similar to the Pinewood Derby, the scout's rockets are designed and build by the boys, then raced along long fishing-line tracks.  The rockets are propelled by a rubber band and propeller assembly.  Don't twist them too tight or they'll break.  There is a lot of strategy in these races.

Turkey Shoot

What could be better than the childhood memories of making your first sling-shot out of a well shaped stick and large rubber bands.  Our scouts will have those same memories when they grow up thanks to this annual November event.  Acorns are shot at two-foot tall cardboard turkeys (we save the real ones for the tables).

Blue & Gold Dinner

This annual dinner is not only when we take time out to remember the history and traditions of Scouting, but also to celebrate the advancement of our oldest Scouts out of our Pack and into the ranks of Boy Scouts.  Dinners were once far more common among Scouting Packs, but have fallen aside in favor of shorter, more hectic meetings.  This is our chance to slow down, enjoy each-other's wonderful cooking, and be proud of how far our Scouts have come.  Hosted and planned by the parents of the oldest Scouts, this event can be anything from a catered dinner in a nice banquet hall, to a BBQ party, or even a festive themed pot-luck.

Rain Gutter Regatta

The third pine-model kit race, but this time the boys themselves are responsible for the power behind the vehicle.  Sailboats are the model d'Jour for this event, but think hard about building these racers.  In this event water-resistance, balance, sail shape, and a scout that knows how to blow evenly and strongly are all critical factors.

Some of the other events that Pack 89 enjoys most years are:

Whale Watching

Forestry Trail Building

Blue Jay Christmas Parade

Most years the Pack tries to head out to do whale watching at least once.  Timed around Dana Point's Festival of Whales, we sometimes get lucky and see the grand creatures, sometimes only catch a small glimpse, but ALWAYS have a great time out on the open seas.

Pack 89 has adopted a segment of beautiful Forestry hiking trail in the area between Cedar Glen and Hook Creek.  Twice a year we venture out, escorted by Forestry to rebuild rain-damaged areas, and strengthen the trail against the stream that runs alongside.

Celebrating that special time of year is something our Scouts look forward to every time the weather turns cold.  Marching in the parade is not always comfortable, but is ALWAYS a great time.  Cookies and Cocoa follow the event in the warmth Coldwell Banker's conference room.  Thanks CB!

Ice Skating

Fund Raisers

Summer Camp

We are lucky enough to have a world-class ice skating training center right here in our own small town.  It would be a shame not to enjoy it!  So pull on those mittens, grab a warm jacket, and come skating with us at the Ice Castle Training Center.

Running a Pack is an expensive prospect, but raising the money can be fun.  We hold several fund-raisers a year, which cover the bulk of the program costs that would otherwise be paid by parents.  Selling popcorn is our largest event, and kicks off our Scouting year in September.

With Camp Helendade just up the highway in Running Springs, we heavily encourage our Scouts to attend summer camp.  This is a GREAT opportunity to get out of the house, learn new things, camp in a very easy environment, and have a great time!
